Protect Our Turtles with the Turtle Guardian Curaçao & Bonaire Specialty Sea turtles, vital to marine ecosystems, are facing increasing threats, from habitat destruction and pollution to climate change. These ancient mariners play a crucial role in maintaining the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds. By joining the Turtle Guardian Curaçao & Bonaire Specialty, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills needed to protect these remarkable creatures and their habitats. During this course, you’ll participate in two scuba dives where you’ll observe sea turtles in their natural environment and engage in conservation activities that contribute to their long-term survival. What You Will Learn Turtle Identification: Learn to identify the key species of sea turtles found in Curaçao and Bonaire, including green, hawksbill, loggerhead, and leatherback turtles. Behavior and Ecology: Understand turtle behavior, nesting habits, and their vital role in marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs and seagrass beds. Environmental Threats: Explore the primary threats facing sea turtles, including plastic pollution, ghost nets, and climate change, and learn how divers can help mitigate them. Conservation Practices: Participate in activities such as monitoring turtle behavior, collecting data, or contributing to reef and beach clean-ups. Performance Requirements The Turtle Guardian Curaçao & Bonaire Specialty includes: Knowledge Development: Participate in a classroom or online session to learn about sea turtle biology, threats, and conservation efforts, and complete the Turtle Guardian Knowledge Review. Turtle Observation Dive: Identify turtle species and record observations on an underwater slate during your first open water dive. Conservation Dive: Engage in a hands-on conservation activity during your second open water dive, such as monitoring turtle habitats or documenting environmental threats. Course Requirements Minimum Age: 10 years old for Junior Open Water Divers, 15 years old for Open Water Divers. Prerequisite Certification: PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent). Medically Fit for Diving: A medical questionnaire is required to ensure your fitness for diving. Please contact us for more information. Time Commitment: Approximately 1 day (or 2 days if preferred). Certification Upon successful completion, you’ll receive the PADI Project AWARE Specialty Certification, showcasing your commitment to marine conservation.
